Fleece Ski Snow Mask Tutorial

By Stacy T

I showed this mask that I made my Dad for Christmas and was asked by several to put together a tutorial!!  Ask and you shall receive, right? LOL

First things first, your materials

  • Fleece.   Approximately 22″ wide and 24″ long.  I like to use Malden Mills Windpro or Pacific Tech 120z Fleece.  But the anti-pill Solid Fleeces from Joanns would work as well!
  • A yard of 1/4″ polybraid elastic
  • The Pattern templates.  Found here in PDF form!

First fold your Fleece with Right sides together with the stretch going from left to right.  Place Large Template onto the fold edge as pictured.

Measure straight down from the curve edge either 12″ for kids mask or 14″ adult mask and MARK with marking pen.  Then measure straight across the bottom from the end of the mark to the fold edge!

Place face hole template piece along the fold edge at the top as shown and cut out!

Now with the Right Sides of the Fleece together *some fleece have a softer side or more vibrant print side you might want on the outside or inside* Sew the curved and back edge using a straight stitch and 1/4″ seam allowance.  I own a serge but find that using the sewing machine keeps the serger edges from scratching your head/neck.

Cut your face hole elastic.  14″ for kids, 17″ for adults.  Loop into a circle, overlap edges and place on the top seam allowance 1″ from the face hole edge..  Stitch over to secure in place.

Fold the edge of the face mask over the elastic and pin along the edge.  Make sure the elastic is all the way inside the fold and you dont stitch over it.  I usually dont pin anymore but just fold over every few inches and stitch.

I like to stitch with the inside of the face mask facing me so I can clearly see the edge of the folded in edges to stitch on.  The stitches get buried in the fleece anyway.   Then I trim any excess fleece along the edge.

Cut your bottom elastic, 13″ kids and 16″ for adults.  Now loop your bottom elastic and attach to the seam allowance the same way you did the face hole elastic above.

Turn the mask right sides out and your face mask is now complete.

My 8.5yo girl wearing the kids mask and me wearing the kids mask, lol  Granted it was a tad too tight for my taste, lol.

Hi, this is great. My 4 year old daughter has had two episodes of cold-induced hives, and I have been desperately looking for a pattern to make her a mask, so that she can play in the snow for longer than 5 minutes at a time. I’ve only been able to find knitting patterns up until now. This will work perfectly. Thanks!
