Our diaper bag.. made with Joel Dewberry “Aviary” fabrics

So I heavily modified 2 pattern pieces from a Butterick tote bag pattern to make this diaper bag for us.

I quilted the front/bag/sides with fusible fleece, added stiff peltex to the bottom for a little stamina on the bottom. Put snaps on the sides so I could bring them in or unsnap when I needed the bag to be HUGE. Small pockets inside on both ends, and then a long pocket separated down the middle on the other. Made a “tab” to fold over and snap onto the front to hold the bag together.. There are 3 snap settings for when the bag is barely full, full, and loaded, lol.Β  And there is a doubled over strip of twill tape in the side seam inside with a snap on the end and at the seam to snap on a paci, keys, toys, etc.

Here are some pics!

Regrets: The tab is too long, I wish I would have interfaced the lining too to make it even more sturdy *although it does stand all on its own EMPTY*, and I think I would have liked it a tad bit smaller, like an inch shorter and wider.

Beauty-ful! Pretty fabrics all lined up nicely on the front like that. Horizontal strips are so underrated. I’ve seen so many vertical strips and have thought someone ought to try some horizontal ones. You beat me to it! Very pretty, though, and I’m sure it will get some good use.

I think it came out great! Love those fabrics!

Gorgeous!! I never had a cute diaper bag, and that’s one thing I do regret. I used an uber-practical plain black backpack for all three kids. Serviceable but not pretty at all. πŸ™‚

Ahh thanks so much to all of you for commenting/stopping by!! πŸ˜€ I had a mama make me a custom Mei Tei Carrier out of the Aviary fabrics and so it matches my bag now!! So cool!! πŸ˜€

I think it looks great. We also used a “practical” diaper bag, not stylish whatsoever… but at least my husband will carry it.
Is the tab too long when it’s stuffed full? I wondered if you could fold it up, like a cuff, with snaps, and embellish each side of the current snap with covered buttons (to match one of those great fabrics). Then it would be shorter, and could be longer if it needs to be loaded up.
Nice job. Wish I was that crafty.
