OK, I promised some of you I would get this wrote up, so here it is!
Materials Needed:
- 6 pieces of cotton woven fabric cut 2 x 3.5″
- 3 pieces of fusible fleece interfacting cut 2 x 3.5″
- 6 ribbons cut to 2.5 to 3 inches long
- 2.5 to 3″ Unfinished wood ring
- Iron
- Sewing Machine
Step #1
Cut all pieces above. Iron Fusible Fleece to WRONG SIDE of 3 pieces of your cotton woven material.
Sew 2 piece together RIGHT SIDES together using no more than a 1/4″ Seam allowance. Start on the long side just 1/2″ from edge. Be sure to go back and forth when you start to secure stitches. Continue around and add a FOLDED piece of ribbon to each SHORT edge by folding and tucking it between the layers as shown in the picture. I pinned them to stay in place but I actually tuck them in the ends as I sew along. Stop sewing about 1/2″ from the edge on the long side you started on leaving a 1.5-2″ hole.
Trim the corners as shown and turn your pieces right side out through the hole you left on the long side. Push corners out with a sharp object. A pen or end of a pair of scissors works nicely. Be sure not to poke through the fabric. Turn the raw edges in along the hole you left. Sew around the whole piece 1/8th” from edge.
Step # 5
I use a zipper foot and put my needle in the farthest left position. Wrap your piece around the ring and match the edges. Stitch along the edge of the wood ring as close as you can. Make sure to go back and forth to secure stitches when you start and finish. Trim ends. Repeat steps 2-5 for each piece!
GIve to the baby of your choice and admire your work 😉
If you have any questions, just let me know!! 😀

these are neat. i want to do one for my great-niece for christmas. where would i find the wood rings? would drapery rings work?
November 21, 2012 at 6:54 pm |
You can get them on etsy. Drapery rings are no good as they aren’t sealed. They need to be sealed with olive oil and bees wax

What a wonderful easy baby gift! Thanks.
November 15, 2008 at 10:05 am |
Thanks for sharing your great gift idea on Sew, Mama, Sew. I’m still a novice at sewing and I’m not sure I know what fusible fleece interfacing is. I have the added disadvantage of living in Austria, so I can’t just go to a fabric store and ask about it. The place where I buy lining has two varieties — one is fairly stiff and I use it for lining bags or things that need a defined structure, and the other is very light-weight and adds a little weight, but not really much stability. Do you think either of these would work? If so, which do you recommend using?
November 15, 2008 at 10:08 am |
These are great! I am the nursery director at my church and am always looking for a little handmade gift I can add to baby shower presents!
November 15, 2008 at 1:14 pm |
Alisha~ Fusible Fleece is a soft light weight interfacing. It is fusible on one side so you can iron it to your fabric. I wouldnt use a stiff material because when you double the pieces over the ring and sew through all the layers that would be a lot of layers and the pieces wouldnt conform to the ring as well 😀
Enjoy! 😀

November 29, 2008 at 12:19 pm |
Okay, I’m sure I’m just being paranoid b/c no one else has been concerned about this–but have you ever found the recipients concerned that their child is gumming a wooden ring? I’d be worried about splinters… I don’t know, is this not an issue? Sorry, I feel like it’s a dumb question, but this is so cute and I’d love to make one for some friends–I’m just afraid they’d be worried.
November 29, 2008 at 11:25 pm |
Hey Ann Marie… The rings I use are so finely sanded that there would be no way to get a splinter from them. *At least I dont see how it could be possible* Also I found that my daughter actually chews on the fabric parts more and just uses the ring to grasp it.
The rings I use are also NOT stained so there is no varnish or chemicals for them to ingest. 😀

you can buy wood teething rings on etsy (see my above link). And they will NOT splinter or harm your child.
think back before plastic was around, and i know it is hard to think of a life before plastic lol but children use to play with only wood toys. And think of how natural wood is vs. plastic. And we all know of the lead scare, and because most of our products come from China these days – we have no guarantee that the lead issue won’t come up again. So purchasing and using natural wood items and home made items are starting to make more sense to me these days.
This is a wonderful idea! Thanks for the tutorial. I am brand new to your blog, as in just yesterday! You have wonderful ideas and tutorials, i am glad i stumbled upon it when i was goggle searching for sewing blogs. :o)

Wait, you didn’t cover the wood? Okay so the baby should handle a little tougher things, but NOT unfinished wood. I like it overall, cute, but could you create something to wrap over the wood? I think its so simple and cute though…
November 21, 2012 at 7:54 pm |
Babies should experience a range of textures and wood if has a smooth finish is perfectly preferable to plastic any day. (Finished/ painted you need to be carful of to ensure not toxic though)
February 6, 2009 at 4:13 pm |
The wood is not covered because the wood rings I purchase are sanded to a smooth perfection.
February 6, 2009 at 4:13 pm |
Unfinished wood is perfectly safe for babies to chew on.

My programmer is trying to persuade me to move to .net from PHP.
I have always disliked the idea because of the costs.
But he’s tryiong none the less. I’ve been using WordPress on various websites for about a

I have heard excellent things about blogengine.net.
Is there a way I can transfer all my wordpress posts into it?
